Prom is often considered as one of the most memorable events in every teenager’s life. It is a night of extravagant dancing, glitzy dresses, and dapper suits. A time to celebrate youth and the beginning of adulthood. However, for 14-year-old Jerika Bolen from Wisconsin, Jerika’s prom would be anything but typical because it’s going to be her last dance. Diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, she has decided to stop her medical treatments and live the remaining days of her life on her terms. Despite her condition, she wanted to experience prom, and her community made it happen.
Jerika was ecstatic at the thought of her prom. For her, it was both a celebration of her life and a chance to say goodbye to her peers. She wanted to have the full prom experience: attending the dance with her friends, dressing up in a sparkly dress, and dancing to the latest music hits. When the word got out, the local community and businesses pitched in to create a prom that Jerika would never forget.
Hundreds of people turned up dressed in their best attire for the sweet event. The prom was held at the Grand Meridian in Appleton, Wisconsin. The ballroom was decorated in a winter wonderland theme with blue and white hues. Jerika arrived in a red glittery gown in a princess-style carriage. Upon her arrival, everyone welcomed her with applause, and she had the chance to lead the first dance with her brother.
Jerika was glowing, and she felt like a real princess. She didn’t need her wheelchair to dance and twirl, even for a brief moment, with the help of her family and friends. Jerika and her guests enjoyed a night filled with music, laughter, and love. They danced to an array of hits from The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” and the classic, “YMCA” by The Village People. They also enjoyed foods from various popular food vendors in the area.
Jerika was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love she had received from everyone who attended her prom. Her mother, Jen Bolen, spoke to the reporters and said, “The night was something she said would be meaningful. And she knew that there were a lot of people on her side.”
Jerika’s story touched the hearts of millions around the world. Her strength, bravery, and enduring spirit inspired many people in the community and beyond. Her prom may have been her last dance, but it will remain in the hearts of those who attended as a testament to the joy of life. Jerika taught us all an invaluable lesson: that despite life’s challenges, we must surround ourselves with love, hope, and positivity. Let’s continue to celebrate our life, and honor those who touched our hearts, just like Jerika.
